Yamunanagar, April 22

The state government makes tall claims to promote sports, but nothing has been done on the ground.

For the past many years, sportspersons from the district are waiting to get equipment for training.

Sources in the Sports and Youth Affairs Department said there was no coach for kabaddi, basketball and cricket in the district. The handball coach was sent to Rohtak on deputation months ago. Similarly, hockey coach was sent on deputation to Sonepat nearly a year ago, said the sources.

Yamunanagar has a district-level sports complex at Tejli in the city and six Rajiv Gandhi sports complexes at Chhachhrauli, Nagal, Barsan, Golni, Lahadpur and Kotra Khas villages. There are also three mini-stadiums at Kharwan, Tibbi Arainyan and Bahadarpur villages.

“Our village has a mini-stadium, but it lacks both equipment and coach,” said Kanwalbir of Kharwan village. He said his daughter had appeared in Class 12 examinations and she had keen interest in athletics, but could not practice at the mini-stadium due to lack of facilities.

An official of the Sports Department said that they had not received sports equipment from the department for the past more than three years.
