Chandigarh, May 24

Against the backdrop of spate of violent incidents against women, safety of the women took the centre stage at a high-level meeting of the state government here today.

Chaired by ACS (Home) Ram Niwas and attended by, among others, DGP BS Sandhu, the meeting decided to formulate a comprehensive plan for women safety. Ram Niwas directed the DGP that every district should prepare a “women safety action plan” for a period of three months. The IGPs and the Commissioners of Police (CPs) concerned should monitor the action plan every month.

Sources said senior officers such as IGPs, CPs, DCPs, SPs and DSPs had been asked to visit educational institutions and interact with students in order to sensitise them about the safety of the girl students. The girl students should be encouraged to use the women’s helpline and report the incidents of eve-teasing without any fear.

Recently, Haryana was rattled by a series of heinous crime against women, including gang rapes. Besides educational institutions, factories, where a large number of women employees were engaged, would also be visited by senior police officers to instill a sense of security among them. This would be done in assistance with civil officials through the Deputy Commissioners.

Meanwhile, it was also decided to use decoys on the sensitive routes where frequent incidents of eve-teasing were reported. Help of members of the Panchayati Raj Institutions and the NGOs would be taken in a bid to curb crime against the women.
