With 2 days to go, lukewarm response to Karnal EWS flats

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) (Urban) has been witnessing a lukewarm response in the city. Although 840 flats have been constructed for economically weaker sections (EWS) category, only 150 beneficiaries have applied so far.

As many as 6,303 families, which did not have their own house, were identified during a survey by the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC). The Housing Board and the KMC are making all efforts to make people aware of applying under this scheme. The deadline for the registration is September 14.

Under the EWS category, the KMC had identified those families that have an annual income not exceeding Rs 3 lakh. As per the guidelines of the affordable housing project, 840 flats had been constructed for the EWS category in different parts of the city. The cost of one BHK flat is Rs4.75 lakh. A beneficiary has to deposit 10 per cent (Rs47,500) at the time of registration, 10 per cent at the time of draw for house and 10 per cent at the time of possession. The government will contribute Rs2.5 lakh to each beneficiary as subsidy, according to Om Parkash, SDO, Housing Board, Sector-4.

As of now, only 150 beneficiaries had got themselves registered after depositing 10 per cent of the total amount, he added.

Parveen Chugh, city project officer, KMC, said under the affordable housing project, as many as 9,805 applications were received. Of these, 6,368 families did not have their house, while the remaining 2,943 were eligible for beneficiary-led component scheme. After the scrutiny of the 6,368 beneficiaries, 6,303 were found to be eligible for the scheme.

“We are spreading awareness on the issue. It is a golden opportunity for those who do not have their own house,” said Rajiv Mehta, Commissioner, KMC.
