The police are yet to make any headway in the rape and murder case of a six-year-old girl in Uklana town of the district. After committing the crime, the accused dumped her body near the Telephone Exchange building in the town on Friday night.

Under pressure from various quarters, Superintendent of Police (SP) Manisha Chaudhary today camped at the Uklana police station where number of suspects were summoned and interrogated in a bid to solve the case.

Director General of Police (DGP) BS Sandhu said, “The police have been zeroing in on suspected persons from the area, including drug addicts. It will take some time, but I am hopeful that the accused would be nabbed soon. We are taking care in the investigation so that no innocent person is harassed unnecessary,” said the DGP.

The DGP said, “It is a very heinous and barbaric crime and the police are making sincere efforts to crack the case. The investigation is going on from different angles and suspected persons from even the neighbouring districts will be questioned.”

However, the SP and other members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the case could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

One of the youths who were questioned by the police revealed that there were nearly 15-16 youths inside the police station. “Around 4-5 youths have been separately questioned by the SP,” he said.
