State mulls code for properties to curb tax evasion

The Haryana Government is set to put in place a foolproof mechanism to streamline property tax collection.

Under the new system currently being implemented as a result of the drone-based geographical information survey (GIS) of all properties across the state, each property will be given a unique identification or quick response (QR) code for better realisation of property tax.

Sources said currently the GIS was under way in civic bodies to analyse all properties, including residential, commercial and institutional properties, to determine the location of each ward, street and house to prepare a base map for each town. The record in the base map is being synchronised with the old record of the municipality to prepare the authentic record.

After preparing zero-defect property records, an 18-digit QR will be installed outside all build-up properties across the state in a bid to increase the resources of the civic body through better property tax collection.

Currently, there are 86 civic bodies in the state, including 10 municipal corporations, 19 municipal councils and 58 municipal committees in the state. As of now, there are approximately over 32.36 lakh properties in the state.

The sources said the QR code generation would go a long way in preparing the exact inventory of all properties in the digitised format. The digitised format could subsequently be used for a variety of purposes such as transferring benefits of government schemes to citizens using the same QR codes, the sources asserted.

Recently, the digitisation of the properties led to increasing the property inventory by over 47,000 in 19 municipalities in the state.
