Hisar, January 12

The sarpanches of many villages, who were asked by the district administration to attend a function to initiate anti-polythene campaign in the district, boycotted the official function and staged a demonstration at the Block Development and Panchayat Office yesterday.

The district administration had called a meeting of the sarpanches of 190 villages in the six blocks i.e. Hisar-1, Hisar-2, Agroha, Adampur, Uklana and Barwala blocks in the district. Though, most of them reached the office to attend the meeting.

However, when they were informed about the agenda of the meeting, most of them started complaining that the district administration had not been cooperating with them in carrying out the development works, while the state government, too, had not been issuing grants for the works in their respective villages.

The sarpanches refused to participate in the meeting and walked out. Krishan Kumar, Sarpanch, Nalwa village, said the district administration was using them as government functionaries to pursue their own agendas.

“We are being issued directions by the officials to carry out particular functions, while nobody is ready to hear our concerns and the issues related to villages,” he said. “We have given two days time to the district administration to take up our grievances. We will also hold another meeting at Krantiman park in the town on Monday and will chalk out strategy for further course of action,” said the members of the association.
