Yamunanagar, December 14

The campaigning for the Municipal Corporation elections came to a close here on Friday evening with leaders holding roadshows and public meetings.

Congress leaders led by Rajya Sabha member Kumari Selja held a roadshow in support of mayoral candidate Rakesh Sharma ‘Kaka’, while Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari addressed a public meeting in favour of party’s mayoral candidate Madan Chauhan.

The Congress-supported roadshow passed through main routes of Yamunanagar and Jagadhri. Several cars, motorcycles and rickshaws were part of the roadshow.

Exuberant over the Congress victory in the Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, Selja attacked the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state, dubbing them as “anti-people”.

“The BJP’s anti-people agenda has been exposed. People have made up their mind to dislodge its state governments across the country,” she said.

On the other hand, BJP’s Tiwari addressed a public meeting in a wedding palace. Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain, mayoral candidate Chauhan, Ambala MP Ratan Lal Kataria’s wife Banto Kataria and Panchkula MLA Gian Chand Gupta attended the meeting.

Tiwari said Chauhan was his old associate and he was a true soldier of the party. “Those who ruled for 60 years looted the country. They did nothing for the poor,” he said.

In some areas of the twin towns of Yamunanagar and Jagadhri, Independents may catch the fancy of voters, but the contest seems to be among Chauhan, Rakesh Sharma and INLD-BSP candidate Sandeep Goyal.
