An accused in a rape case escaped from the police custody here today.

The police have formed six teams and sent them to railway station and bus stand in Yamunanagar and Jagadhri and other places across the district to nab the accused. However, the teams were clueless till late evening.

Sources said Babu Ram (32) had allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl of his village on July 10. The accused also threatened the victim of dire consequences if she told anyone about the crime.

A case was registered against the accused under Sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and POCSO Act.

Sources said the police arrested the accused on Thursday night. However, he went to the toilet at the Buria police station today morning and fled.

According to the information, a policeman was deputed outside the toilet. Some policemen tried to chase him, but they failed to catch hold of him. The accused was to be produced in a local court today.

“We have formed several teams to nab the accused,” said Ram Kumar, SHO, Buria police station.

He said that the action would be taken against the negligent policemen.
