Protest threat proves hollow in Karnal

KARNAL: Amid the threat by the various students’ organisations to oppose the student union elections, polling for various posts of student councils in 13 colleges went off peacefully on Wednesday.

Amid the threat by the various students’ organisations to oppose the student union elections, polling for various posts of student councils in 13 colleges went off peacefully on Wednesday.

Heavy security was deployed outside colleges to monitor the law and order situation.

The Superintendent of Police, Surinder Singh Bhoria, said no untoward incident was reported from the district.

The results of the elections were declared in the evening. Manvi Putatunda has been elected president of Dyal Singh College. Koshinder Rana was elected vice-president, Smriti as secretary, Riddhima as joint secretary and Anshu, Jatin Kathpalia, Rajender, Rakesh and Ankit were elected executive members, said Dr KL Gosain, principal of the college.

Gurbaj has been elected president in Government PG College, Karnal; Kiran Midha in KVA DAV College for Women; Meenakshi, a student of MA, Music (P), in Government College for Women; Anju Bala, a student of B Com-III, in Government College, Gharaunda; and Kajal in DAV College.

Low polling in Rohtak colleges 

Rohtak: Indirect elections for students unions were held amidst heavy deployment of police personnel at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) and several colleges here on Wednesday. Low polling was reported from most of the centres. The process remained largely peaceful. Representatives of different students’ organisations staged a protest and raised slogans against the state government on MDU campus while the polling process was in progress. As per the university authorities, 89 class representatives (CRs) were elected unanimously and 102 toppers were nominated as CRs. The police took some girl students into custody.
