Nobel laureate and child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi today said child abuse had emerged as an epidemic in society. It was unfortunate that family members were involved in more than 70 per cent child abuse cases.
He said a collective battle was required to fight against the evil for ensuring safe childhood. He said this while interacting with mediapersons after his Bharat Yatra reached Rewari.
The yatra was aimed at creating awareness for child rights and protection from sexual abuse and trafficking. He urged people to protect the rights of children and end their exploitation.
Earlier, the yatra was welcomed here this morning. Schoolchildren held placards and handmade posters on safe childhood in their hands on both sides of the road.
Satyarthi called upon children to inform their parents immediately if anything wrong happened with them. Instead of keeping silent, they should raise their voice to scare perpetrators, he said.
India would feel safe only when childhood was safe and secure, he said. He exhorted parents to observe the behaviour of their children.
“Parents should not overlook silence of their children and change in their behaviour. They should talk to their children to know the reason on feeling any change in their behaviour,” Satyarthi said.
Bal Krishan Goel, member of the Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, also addressed schoolchildren and parents.
Activist wants national tribunal on child abuse
Rohtak: Giving a clarion call to eradicate crimes against children, Kailash Satyarthi on Saturday exhorted people to shun their indifferent approach towards sensitive issues. He was delivering a lecture on "Safe Childhood, Safe India" at Maharshi Dayanand University. The activist maintained that society should play a proactive role to curb exploitation of children. He demanded a national tribunal to check such crimes. Governor-cum-Chancellor Kaptan Singh Solanki was the chief guest. TNS
