Chandigarh, November 4

Gian Chand Gupta, two-time MLA from Panchkula, was unanimously elected Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha here today. His name was proposed by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and seconded by Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala immediately after the swearing-in of new MLAs by Pro-tem Speaker Raghubir Kadian on the first day of the Haryana Assembly session.

Since there was no other candidates for the post, Kadian declared Gupta elected unopposed. Congratulating Gupta, Khattar hoped that given his experience as Chandigarh Mayor and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the  Assembly, Gupta would discharge his duties by rising above political affiliations. Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the Congress would play the role of “constructive Opposition”. — TNS
