Class X: Teachers blame no-detention policy for poor show

The Haryana Rajkiya Adhyapak Sangh-70, a teachers’ body, has blamed the no-detention policy till Class VIII for poor performance in the Class X Haryana Board of School Education examination, the result of which was declared recently.

A total of 57.39 per cent students passed the exam this year, while the pass percentage last year was 51.15 per cent. 

President of the sangh Subhash Bhardwaj said: “Though the results have improved, they are still on the lower side. Despite repeated requests, the no-detention policy has not been scrapped and is the major reason for the dismal performance in the Class X board exams. The students must not be promoted to the next class without passing the examination.”

“A large number of meritorious students are taking admission in private schools after clearing an exam under rule 134-A and it is also a reason behind the dismal performance,” he said.

Bhardwaj said: “The criteria for admission in a class must be knowledge and not age. Besides, 75 per cent attendance must be made mandatory. An agency should be hired to prepare the mid-day meal and no teacher should be given any non-teaching work. The lack of staff and equipment are holding back schools from functioning properly. Schools should be provided teachers on demand.”

The teachers’ body has also been  demanding appointment of trained postgraduates as primary teachers on the pattern of Delhi. Its other demands include transfer of teachers in April, curriculum-related suggestions be sent to the National Council of Educational Research and Training after discussion with the body and books should have a minimum life of three years.
