Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, accompanied by his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath, filed his nomination papers from the Karnal Assembly segment on Tuesday.

BJP leader Brij Gupta filed the nomination as a covering candidate for Khattar.

In the 2014 elections, Khattar had defeated two-time legislator Jai Parkash Gupta by a massive margin of 63,773 votes. This time, BJP workers have resolved to surpass 1 lakh votes in the victory margin.

After filing the papers, Khattar told the media that he was confident of winning by a bigger margin from last time.

While talking with media persons, Khattar showed confidence on his party workers and leaders and gave responsibility to look after his elections as he has to campaign across the state.

“People of Karnal showered me with their blessings in the last elections. I am hopeful that this time too, they will ensure my victory with a thumping margin — more than the one recorded in 2014,” Khattar said.

To a query, Khattar denied resentment among party workers following the release of BJP’s first of nominees. “This time, the demand for BJP tickets was high. But party workers are disciplined and they know that only one person can be fielded from one seat. The leadership has talked to them,” he said.

Adityanath, while addressing a gathering in Sector 12 here, Adityanath appreciated Khattar’s working style and described him as an “honest” and “dedicated” Chief Minister who provided people of Haryana with corruption-free and transparent governance.

“Khattar has given a new direction to Haryana by abolishing nepotism and dynastic politics in the past five years,” the UP Chief Minister said.

He and Khattar exhorted party workers to ensure BJP’s victory on more than 75 seats.
