An infant admitted to a private hospital here, who was referred to the PGI in Chandigarh, died when the oxygen cylinder emptied on the way on Saturday.

On a complaint by Sahil, father of the deceased, the police registered a case against Pardeep, owner of the ambulance, and the driver. The bereaved father complained to the CMO and RTA, demanded action against the guilty.

Sahil said his one-and-a-half-month-old son Vihav was suffering from fever and was under treatment at a Kaithal hospital since Friday evening.

On Saturday, the doctor referred him to the PGI. When the ambulance neared Pehowa, the oxygen cylinder emptied.

The driver was asked to get the cylinder filled, but he ignored the request. The condition of the infant deteriorated. The driver took the ambulance to a Pehowa hospital, where doctors declared the infant brought dead.

Pardeep said when they received the telephone call for ambulance, two oxygen cylinders were working fine. He said when there was a problem on the way, the driver wanted to get the cylinder checked.

He claimed that those accompanying the patient insisted on not stopping the vehicle. Social activist Raju Dohar demanded an inquiry into the operation of private ambulances. — OC
