Faridabad, April 19

Sitting MP and BJP candidate Krishan Pal Gurjar took the lead in filing nomination papers for the Lok Sabha poll over his rival Congress candidate Lalit Nagar. Nagar, who was supposed to file his nomination today, postponed it to April 22.

Gurjar, who had won the last Lok Sabha election (2014) by a margin of 4.66 lakh votes over his nearest rival Avtar Singh Bhadana of the Congress, claimed that he would be able to repeat his win and that too by a bigger margin this time.

Gurjar said that the issue of national security and the tough stand taken by the Modi government on terrorism coupled with the results of welfare schemes for the common man had led to mass support for the BJP in these elections.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Lalit Nagar, who was also expected to file his nomination today, announced that he would file the papers on April 22 as he claimed that Monday was a more suitable day. Rejecting reports and claims of stiff opposition to his candidature by certain senior leaders within the party, Nagar said his ticket was final.

However, sources in the Congress said that opposition from a former MP, a former Haryana minister and a sitting MLA had become clear due to their absence from a workers’ meeting convened by Nagar here recently to chalk out the poll campaign.
