A team of the district Health Department has unearthed a sex-determination racket in Ludhiana (Punjab), and arrested a couple and a tout. A laptop, gloves and Rs20,000 were seized from them.

The team, led by Deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Neelam Kakkar, had got the information that a tout, identified as Sukhvinder Singh, took women to Ludhiana for the sex determination test and charged Rs20,000 for it.

The team contacted Sukhvinder, informing him that a pregnant woman (a decoy customer) wanted to determine the gender of her foetus. The two left for Ludhiana on Wednesday. The team was on their trail.

After entering Punjab, the pregnant woman was asked to sit in a car with one Amarjeet Singh who took her to his house in Jadtoli village.

Amarjeet’s wife Amandeep Kaur reportedly conducted the test. As the Kaithal team had informed their counterparts in Ludhiana, a team comprising Deputy Superintendent of Police SP Singh and Senior Medical Officer Dr S Kaur raided the house and arrested the accused.

Sukhvinder, a resident of Cheeka in Kaithal district, Amarjeet and his wife were booked under Section 420 of the IPC and Section 5(2) of the PC-PNDT Act at the Sadar police station in Ludhiana.
