Chandigarh, September 22

The death of cows at a government-run gaushala at Mathana village in Kurukshetra district today came under judicial scanner, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court taking cognisance of a petition filed in public interest.

Taking up the PIL filed by Kulwant Singh, the Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhir Mittal also issued notice of motion to the State of Haryana and other respondents for November 6.

The petitioner alleged several cows had died due to hunger and thirst in the last one-and-half month in the Mathana gaushala in the absence of proper arrangement. The gaushala was started on panchayat land by the district administration.

Seeking directions to the respondents to conduct an independent inquiry into the matter, the petitioner submitted that an “honest agency” should be deputed for fair and proper probe against the defaulting officers.
