Karnal, September 3

After securing the first place in Haryana and 41st rank in India out of more than 4,000 cities in Swachh Survekshan 2018, Karnal has set eyes for the top position in the country in the next year’s survey.

Karnal may follow in the footsteps of the cleanest city Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Recently, a delegation led by Subhash Chander, executive vice-chairman, Haryana Swachh Bharat Mission, visited Indore for three days and learnt about the steps taken by its administration to become the cleanest city.

Karnal had secured 65th rank in the country in Swachh Survekshan 2017, improving from 123rd rank in 2014.

“I have submitted a report on the Indore visit to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who is keen on making Haryana the cleanest state in the country,” Chander said, adding that by following the Indore example, Karnal could become the cleanest city in the country.

He said the delegation was informed that Indore city had launched awareness campaigns, including advertisements on cleanliness, songs, slogans and skits. Besides, private and public toilets were constructed in large numbers, and complaints received through the Swachhta application were addressed in a time-bound manner.

He further said that ward heads in Indore were given vehicles to ensure cleanliness in their wards.

“Under the Swachhta Mission, there should be maximum participation of voluntary organisations and public, the subject of cleanliness should be taught in schools, awareness campaigns should be launched in both urban and rural areas, modern machines should be made available for cleanliness, and proper management of solid and liquid waste should be ensured in Haryana,” Chander said.
