Eight women have applied to contest the mayoral election on the BJP symbol in the city. The municipal corporation elections will be held December 16. Besides, nearly 80 aspirants, including 35 women, have applied for the posts of councillor in 26 wards.

Pramod VIj, BJP district president, had invited the applications for the posts of mayor and councillor till November 28.

Sources said the party had fixed some norms for the aspirants, including fee of Rs 5,000 for the post of mayor and Rs 1,000 for the post of councillor.

The women aspirants for the post of mayor are Kusum Bhatt, wife of former councillor Dushyant Bhatt, Komal Saini, daughter-in-law of Ram Kumar Saini, Meenakshi Verma, wife of Praveen Verma, Avneet Kaur, daughter of former mayor Bhupender Singh, Pooja Verma Gumber, Seema Verma, Renu Tanwar and Kanta Nayak.

The Congress has also invited applications for the posts of mayor and councillors.

Satvinder Singh Sandhu ‘Timmi’, in charge of Panipat, said that aspirants could submit their applications on Thursday. An 11-member committee would monitor the poll process, he added. — TNS
