Citizen takes initiative

Ambala: For some time, I had been noticing a crack on the road in the lane adjoining our house. It was gradually widening due to the rains and was giving jerks to motorists. Rather than waiting for the MC authorities, I decided to do ‘sharamdaan’ and fill the crack. “A stitch in time saves nine,” I thought. So I called our gardener Tewari and requested him to assist me in filling the crack. As a veteran, I keep taking such initiatives, be it cleaning of the area or collecting polythene and litter thrown around in our area.— Colonel RD Singh

‘Neki ki Dewaar’ good move 

Panchkula: The ‘Neki ki Dewaar’ initiative (Chandigarh Plus, August 13) by Ambala’s Propkar Sewa Society to enable people to donate clothes etc for the needy is laudable. A nominal price tag of Rs 20 is attached so that people get a buying experience and wear clothes with dignity. Those who find this too costly are provided clothes free. I have come across ‘Neki ki Dewaar’ in some towns of the region, but these remain unorganised ventures. These are a boon for the needy, especially in winter. There is no dearth of donors with a lot to spare. — Lalit Bharadwaj

Garbage piles up as Cleaning staff stays away 

Karnal: No cleaning staff has visited Mela Ram School market for the past 45 days due to which garbage is lying on the roads, causing inconvenience to the people. I have requested the authorities of the Karnal Municipal Corporation but to no avail. Moreover, the quality of the newly constructed roads is very poor and cracks have begun developing on them. I request Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to initiate an inquiry into the road construction as well as the duty of the cleaning staff. — Amit Baweja

Stray cattle menace continues in sadhaura

Yamunanagar: The number of stray cattle has increased tremendously in Sadhaura town of Yamunanagar district in the past several years. Stray bulls, cows and calves are turning into a source of inconvenience and danger. Their herds keep wandering about on the roads, near the bus stand, grain market and other places of the town. This menace is causing a number of problems, including road accidents and traffic jams, in this town. The Municipal Committee should take concrete steps to solve this problem. –Harsh Kumar

Pond encroached upon by land mafia 

Faridabad: A 10-acre land belonging to a pond in Saran village located in the NIT area in the city has been allegedly encroached upon by the land mafia. It has been converted into residential plots and buildings over the past few years. The pond used to serve as a spot to drain rainwater and had been a source of rainwater harvesting for the area. But after it was covered up entirely, waterlogging and drying of tubewells have become common. Such an activity is not only illegal, but also in contrast to the policy of the state government to save or create ponds for storing excess water. — LN Parashar
