Karnal, March 31

Gharaunda Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) Gaurav Kumar will conduct an inquiry into the group clash between inmates at the detention centre in Madhuban on Saturday night.

“I visited the place to assess the situation and assigned a magisterial inquiry to the SDM. The reasons will be known after the report is submitted. Our focus will be on improving the situation inside the centre,” said Deputy Commissioner Vinay Partap Singh.

The police registered a case against 33 inmates by name and started investigation. Sources said two inmates were taken into custody.

“The police registered a case against 33 juvenile inmates for creating a ruckus and damaging property,” said Surinder Singh Bhoria, Superintendent of Police.

He confirmed that two of the inmates tried to flee the premises, but failed to do so. The SDM visited the premises on Sunday and talked to inmates and officials.

It had been learnt that an argument between two inmates turned violent and groups attacked each other on the premises. They reportedly created a ruckus inside the detention centre, damaged furniture and equipment and set documents and computers afire.

The SDM, two Deputy Superintendents of Police and police personnel reached the detention centre and brought the situation under control. A fire brigade was pressed into service to douse the flames.

The condition of one inmate was stated to be critical while four others received minor injuries. The detention centre housed 105 juvenile inmates.
