In all, 24 schools across the state have thrown up zero per cent result in the Class X examinations conducted by the Board of School Examination Haryana (BSEH). The results were announced last week.

The overall pass percentage was not impressive either. Not more than 58 per cent of students cleared the examination.

The data compiled by the Education Department shows that of the 24 schools, 20 are privately managed. The remaining four — in the government sector — are Arohi Model Senior Secondary School in Palwal’s Ali Brahman village, government secondary schools in Karnal’s Balu village and Mund village, and Government Secondary School in Ambala’s Bhurangpur village.

Eleven of the schools are in rural areas and the remaining in urban centres.

At five, Karnal has the highest number of schools with zero per cent result followed by Faridabad (4). Two schools each are in Fatehabad, Rohtak and Sonepat districts, and one each in Palwal, Yamunanagar, Mahendragarh, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Ambala, Hisar, Panipat and Jind districts.

In all, 155 students were enrolled in the 24 schools.

The Board data revealed that except three private schools, all private schools throwing up zero result have students in single digit in the matriculation. There are 20 private schools in which none of the students could pass the examination.

Gurlal Singh, husband of Mund village sarpanch Harpreet Kaur, blamed the poor result on the lackadaisical attitude of teachers. “I visited the school in my village on Monday and inquired about the reasons for the dismal performance. In reply, teachers partly blamed students for being non-serious towards their studies. They cited staff shortage as another reason. Teachers don’t want to take the blame on themselves, but are passing the buck.”

A teacher of Mund village, however, had a different take. He told The Tribune on the condition of anonymity that the poor results were the fallout of the no-detention policy.

Lakhmi Chand, panch of Palwal’s Ali Brahman village and retired government teacher, blamed the poor academic atmosphere in Arohi Model Senior Secondary School, where all 27 students flunked the examination.

“I am not surprised with the performance of the school. During one of my visits to the school during the last session, I found teachers and students missing. I raised the matter with the block-level education office, but nobody was concerned. I even saw some teachers sleeping on the school premises,” Chand said.

Ashok Baghel, District Education Officer, Palwal, said he was unaware of the result of Arohi Model Senior Secondary School. “I have been posted in Palwal recently. I came to know that the school faces staff shortage. Teachers don’t prefer to be appointed in the Ali Brahman school, which is 32 km from the district headquarters. I recently wrote to the head office, seeking permission to reshuffle teachers to schools facing crunch,” he added.
