Two women died after earth caved in at Jind’s Khera Khemawati village on Sunday.

Sources said nine other women were rescued and were under treatment. The deceased are Chameli (65) and Nisha (28). Nisha is survived by three children.

All victims hailed from Khera Khemawati of Safidon. Rajesh Khoth, District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO), said the villagers were engaged in earthworks under the MNREGS. He said prima facie it appeared that safety precautions were not adopted and an investigation would be initiated.

Sources said a group of workers was digging into the earth near a power station on Sunday when earth caved in. Several women were trapped at the site and villagers rushed to the spot to rescue them.

The DDPO said the condition of the inured was stated to be out of danger.

Mandeep Kumar, Safidon SDM, said due compensation would be provided to the victims and next of their kin as per the policy of the state government.
