A 50-year-old woman was allegedly thrashed and paraded semi-naked at Mirpur village in Dera Bassi after her son reportedly eloped with a girl of the village.

However, giving a new twist to the case, the “minor girl”, in her statement before the court, said she was a major and had left her house to marry the man she loved.

The police have booked seven persons, including three women, but no arrests have been made so far.

According to the police, the 50-year-old woman, along with her husband and son, was detained for around five hours and assaulted by neighbours on Wednesday, who alleged that the couple’s elder son had kidnapped their minor daughter.

Sources said after being assaulted, the woman was paraded semi-nude at Mirpur village. The accused even recorded the incident on the mobile to “shame her for her son’s act”. All three members of the family were admitted to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital.

In her statement to the police, the victim said her elder son, Lucky (25), had eloped with a girl on August 1. “Since then, we are trying to locate him. On Wednesday, while we were returning from my parental village, the girl’s family members intercepted us and held us captive for about five hours. They questioned us about Lovely’s whereabouts. All the while they kept beating us up,” the victim told the police.

Deepinder Singh, Dera Bassi SHO, said on a complaint of the victim, a case had been registered under Sections 354, 354B, 341, 323 and 506 of the IPC at the Dera Bassi police station.

“The girl has been recovered. In her statement before the court, she said she was 21 years old and had left home of her own will,” said Deepinder Singh.

“We have also recovered the video and action will be taken as per law. Arrests will be made soon.” Deepinder said.
