Chandigarh, July 9

With the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy revising the solar power generation target of the UT from 30 to 100 MW by the end of 2022, the UT Administration has decided to install solar plants alongside Patiala Ki Rao, a seasonal rivulet.

The Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) has already installed 5.3 MW of rooftop solar photovoltaic plants in the city in the past two years on the lines of the proposal of the Centre to increase solar power generation in states and union territories.

Santosh Kumar, Director, Science and Technology Department, and CEO, CREST, said they would install plants on Patiala Ki Rao and were hoping to generate 25 MW solar power generation from these.

He said the Administration was in talks with the PU and the PGI to install solar plants on their campus. Besides, they would also install plants on rooftops of the ISBTs in Sectors 17 and 43, the MC waterworks and the multi-level parking lot in Sector 17.

In the latest report released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the UT stands first in installation of solar rooftop projects under the government category. It ranks third in the overall list.
