Choose plyboards carefully

Plyboard is a common item that is used frequently during the construction of a house. Many wood items such as wardrobes, walk-in closets, bathroom vanities, dressing areas, LED panels are fabricated from plyboards. The glues used in manufacture of these often are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Formaldehyde and other compounds used in making plyboards are VOCs which emit gases that can cause pollution, make your eyes burn and cause difficulty in breathing. In newly built houses, VOC emission is often a cause of worry. Therefore, always choose plyboards of standard companies that have complied with the prescribed environmental norms. Also ensure that formaldehyde or VOCs have not been used in the plyboards and no odour or emissions are being generated.

Paints can be toxic too

The use of paints, polishes and varnishes in houses is very common. Paints often contain lead which is very harmful for health. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has prescribed stringent standards for lead content in the air. CPCB has recently prescribed a maximum of 90 ppm or 0.09 per cent lead in paints.

High lead content in paints causes air pollution and affects children the most. It hampers brain development and may lead to neurological problems. Till 2013, some companies were selling paint having lead more than 1,000 times the prescribed limit. SO, choose paint carefully by ensuring that it has been manufactured by a company that meets the regulatory standards on lead content. Check the test certificate of paint to ensure that it is free of lead.      — JG
