Under debt, two farmers end life

A 28-year-old debt-ridden farmer, Angrej Singh alias Raju of Kothe Dashmesh Nagar village, Muktsar, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a canal on Saturday. His body was recovered from the canal last night.

As per the statement given to the Kotbhai police, Sukhdev Singh said his son was upset due to increasing debt. “Raju left home on Saturday but did not return. His motorcycle was found along a canal at Thehri village yesterday. Later, his body was found from the canal,” his father informed the police.

The police handed over the body to the family after conducting a post-mortem examination.

Raju owned 2.5 acres of agricultural land. He had two children.

Another debt-ridden farmer, Harjinder Singh (45), committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in Gill Wairaich village, 15 km from Tarn Taran. He had 1.5 acres and used to take land on lease for the past 4-5 years for tilling. He was under a debt of about Rs 20 lakh.

In both cases, the police started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
