Bathinda, February 13

A 23-year-old farmer, Yadvinder Singh, of Sirsiwala village allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train near a railway crossing at Dariyapur village in Mansa district on Thursday night.

Yadvinder, who owned 2.5 acres of land and witnessed damage to cotton crop due to the whitefly attack this season, was allegedly under debt. His neighbour Jaswant Singh said Yadvinder’s father was suffering from cancer and a huge amount of money was being spent on his treatment. This time the youth had sown wheat crop but bank officials and private money lenders used to come for recovery, he said. The railway police have registered a case. — TNS
