Ambala, May 8

After getting reservation along with four other castes in the state, Rors and Tyagis are eyeing reservation at the Centre. The Ror community has submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu, who is heading a committee formed by the Centre to look into Jats’ demand for reservation at the Centre, while the Tyagis are planning to approach the minister.

Ashok Tyagi, president of Tyagi Samaj, Haryana, said: “In a recent meeting, the community expressed its gratitude to the government for granting it reservation. Besides, the community passed a resolution, demanding reservation at the Centre. The Jats are in a better position than us. If they get reservation at the Centre, the government should consider us for the reservation too on the same grounds.”

The population of Tyagis in Haryana is about 40,000.

“In the absence of senior leaders from our community in the government, we may face difficulty in getting reservation at the Centre. But the community has decided to raise its demand,” Tyagi said. Another meeting has been called in Sonepat to chalk out the future course of action. The date is yet to be finalised. Rors, meanwhile, said they were waiting for the government to issue a notification for reservation before taking any step.

“We have got approval for a meeting with Naidu. Since the state government hasn’t issued a notification, we are in no position to meet the minister. Let the government issue the notification and then we will again seek time for the meeting. We want something to have in hand before approaching the minister for reservation at the Centre,” said Nasib Singh Karsa, chief, Akhil Bharatiya Ror Mahasabha.

The Haryana Assembly has passed a Bill to provide reservation to Jats and five other communities — Sikh Jats, Rors, Bishnois, Tyagis and Muslim Jats — in government jobs and educational institutions by constituting a new classification Block ‘C’ in the Backward Classes category.
