Two-day UPES student fest ends

DEHRADUN: The fifth edition of the two-day student fest, organised by the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) and the Student Chapter of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), concluded here today.

The fifth edition of the two-day student fest, organised by the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) and the Student Chapter of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), concluded here today.

Over 200 students, including participants from PDPU, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, UTM, Shillong, Meghalaya, Aditys College, Surapalem, Andhra Pradesh, Nuwrosjee Wadia, Pune, Maharashtra, ITM University, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh; Mohal College, Hyderabad, Telangana; and UPES, DIT, Graphic Era & UIT from Uttarakhand, participated in the festival.

The festival was inaugurated by Baljit Singh, vice-president, Jubilant Energy, in presence of Raj Kanwar, founder, SK Oil Fields, along with Dr SJ Chopra, Chancellor, Dr Shrihari, vice-chancellor and Dr Kamal Bansal, Dean of the college of engineering.

Sharing the details of the competitions held during this festival, Arun Dhand, director, media affairs, said most of the events were focused to check the oil and gas quotient of participants, which included ‘Amphora’, an inter-college quiz for various colleges of Uttarakhand, ‘Barrel Wars’, a three-round event requiring the talents of a driller, a geologist and a chemical engineer, with each round testing different set of skills, ‘Breaking Bid’, event related to petrochemicals, where participants bade for unit operations and processes to most profitably convert raw material into marketable products virtually, ‘Techuminati’, paper presentation based on oil and gas domain, ‘Virtuoso’, poster presentation based on oil and gas domain; ‘Noesis’, quiz event based on oil and gas domain; ‘Source Code’, a coding event.

A series of lectures from various oil and gas industry professionals was also held during the two-day event where students were given deep insights on the field requirements and conditions. The experts also shared what the industry expects from the new age petroleum engineers.

Prizes were given at the valedictory function by special guests, including AK Sacchan, Head of DIT, ONGC; and Abhijit Basu, regional president, ONGC Videsh Ltd.

The UPES-SPE Student Chapter, registered with the SPE North India Section, is a platform where students, pursuing their engineering studies in petroleum and allied sectors, come together to share their knowledge and experience. They also compete amongst themselves through various competitions and interface mediums, beside holding interactions with accomplished industry professionals.
