Former Tripura Governor Sultan Singh (91) was cremated with state honours here this afternoon. He died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi this morning. He was suffering from renal ailment.

Born at Majra Farmana village in Rohtak district on September 19, 1923, Sultan Singh joined the Army where he developed links with revolutionaries. He left the Army and went to Kolkata to participate in the country’s freedom struggle.

He came in contact with certain Congress leaders and joined the party. After the country attained Independence, he became a member of the Punjab Legislative Council and later the Rajya Sabha . He also remained president of the Haryana Congress from 1978 and 1986. He later served as the Governor of Tripura from 1989 to 1990.

He is survived by two sons and three daughters. His cremation here was largely attended.

Chandigarh: Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today expressed grief over Sultan Singh's death. In his condolences to the bereaved family, Khattar prayed to the Almighty that the departed soul might rest in peace.
