Patiala, February 21

A 37-year-old convict lodged in the Maximum Security Jail, Nabha, allegedly committed suicide today by hanging himself from a barrack ventilator. Sarabjit Singh had been sentenced first for the murder of his sister and her husband, and later for killing the man who signed his parole papers.

Jail Superintendent Rajan Kapur said, “We are probing the matter. For the past few days, Sarabjit was upset over a happening in his family. Very few relatives used to come here to meet him.”

In 2013, the court of Patiala Sessions Judge RS Attri had awarded life imprisonment to Sarabjit, a resident of Gajju Khera village, Banur, for murdering a man while out on parole.

The judge had ruled that Sarabjit would remain in jail till death and would not be entitled to any remission or parole.

Sarabjit was already serving life sentence after he murdered his sister, Sanwinder Kaur, and her husband, Suresh Kumar, on June 14, 2008, for marrying against his wishes.

In 2012, he was released on parole, following which he had stabbed Balbir Singh to death after a spat. Balbir had facilitated Sarabjit’s parole.
