Moga, January 17

Contrary to the guidelines of the Election Commission, Agriculture Minister Jathedar Tota Singh’s son Barjinder Singh Brar filed his nomination papers by taking out a roadshow here, choking traffic on the national highway for hours.

SDM-cum-Returning Officer Charandeep Singh has summoned a report from the DSP (city) and video surveillance team to ascertain the violation of the model code. “I have given permission for only 10 vehicles to the SAD candidate; if the number of vehicles exceeded in the police and video surveillance team’s report, I will issue a notice and take action,” he said.

Brar used at least 200 tractors, 500 scooters and many cars/jeeps bearing party flags in the roadshow virtually halting the traffic on all inner roads besides the national highway. Commuters faced a hard time for hours.

His father Tota Singh, mother Mukhtiar Kaur, wife Tejinder Kaur, two daughters and party activists accompanied him to the RO office as he filed the nomination papers. The EC norms allow only five people, including the candidate, but he was accompanied by 15 people.

Brar, in his affidavit filed before the RO, has mentioned that he is facing charges in a CBI case, the trial of which is pending before the CBI court at Patiala. The case was registered against him under Sections 120B, 182, 195, 211, 384 of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. However, the passing of the final order in this case has been stayed by the Supreme Court on his petition.

His wife filed her nomination papers as an independent candidate.
