Tibetans celebrate Dalai Lama’s 80th birth anniversary

Members of the local Tibetan community, Regional Tibetan Women Congress and Tibetan youth Congress celebrated the 80th birth anniversary of their 14th spiritual head, his holiness the Dalai Lama, with fervour and gaiety at Laksmi Narayan temple here today.

The student community from Tibetan Homes and Central School for Tibetans presented traditional folk dance and song items to mark the occasion.

Earlier, special prayers were held at Buddha temple in the Happy Valley, where members of the Tibetan community prayed for the long life of the Dalai Lama.

MLA Mussoorie Ganesh Joshi and Mussoorie Municipal council president Manmohan Singh Mall joined in the festivities and prayed for the long life of the Dalai Lama.

The MLA said it was commendable that the Tibetan community had kept its culture and traditions alive even after living in exile in India for more than past 50 years.

Manmohan Singh Mall said that the town had a close connection with the Tibetan community as His Holiness the Dalai Lama made the hill town his home after being exiled from Tibet in 1959.

Municipal council president OP Uniyal, senior BJP leader Madan Mohan Sharma and others were present on the occasion.
