Three children, including a four-month-old girl, were burnt to death and three others sustained serious injuries after a hut caught fire in Jind city in the wee hours of Sunday.

The police said the cause of fire was yet to be ascertained.

The incident took place near BSNL Telephone Exchange on the Hansi road in Jind city.

Sanu Khan, who hails from Muzzafarnagar in UP, had taken an orchard on lease in Jind city and was living there with his family and brother-in-law Nisar Khan.

Sanu told the police after noticing the fire, both tried to evacuate family members. Though Sanu was able to rescue his two-year-old daughter Zoya and niece Fakku, his three children charred to death in the fire.

Nar Singh, SHO, City, said Sanu’s wife Shakira reportedly suffered 70 per cent burns. Injured are being treated at the PGIMER, Rohtak, he said.

Singh said Nisar and Sanu were present on the spot.

Sanu’s children Afsha (six-year), Zishan (four-year) and four-months-old Jiya died in the fire.

The SHO said prima facie the cause of fire could be a short-circuit caused by a pedestal fan at the hut.

He said there was also a possibility that the fire broke out due to sparks from a mud stove at the hut.
