Chandigarh, December 24

PUTA today initiated a programme, ‘Know the expertise of your faculty’, with the idea that an important element of academic success is meeting and getting to know your colleagues. The first event was organised at the chemistry department.

It was presided over by the Prof Arun K Grover, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University.

It was attended by the colleagues from the chemistry and many other departments of the university. The chemistry department has recently recruited seven faculty members which would add to its strength.

During the event, Dr SC Sahoo with expertise in the area of ‘material science and solid state photochemistry’, spoke on the topic ‘Soon Earth will be Free of Vehicles: Cherish or Perish’.

Dr Sahoo emphasised that the future energy strategies should be flexible and rational considering available energy resources and developing efficient technologies for production, supply and its use.

He said though research on renewable energy sources was underway, use of energy with minimal loss could be a good alternative to spend more time on the development of renewable resources.

He said as an immediate solution was to develop smart materials which could be a good choice as an energy conservation medium. In addition, he said materials showing mechanical response in presence of external stimuli were of relevance for the design of nanoscale actuating devices for smart materials-based applications, including actuators, flexible electronics, artificial muscles, and others.

PUTA plans to have this programme as a regular event and the next event would be held at the humanities department.
