Woollens distributed

Senior Akali Dal leader Jatnderpal Singh Saluja and Damandeep Singh Saluja distributed free sweaters to the needy and poor students of NB Public School, Gagandeep Colony, Bhatian, on the death anniversary of their father late Gurbachan Singh Bhaura. District president of SAD Harbhajan Singh Dang was the chief guest on the occasion.

Christmas procession

The Council of Ludhiana Churches organised a Christmas procession. It began from the Issa Nagari playground and passed through Brown Road, local Bus Stand, Railway Station, Chaura Bazaar, Division No. 3, Baba Dhan Singh Chowk, CMC Hospital and returned to the Issa Nagari ground. Hundreds of devotes took part in the procession. Singing teams on trolleys enthralled the city. More than 60 decorated trolleys marched along with the procession. Priests and pastors from different churches led the procession. ‘Joy to the world’, especially to Ludhiana city, was the prayer of the occasion. All social, political and religious organisations joined the procession with enthusiasm. The Council of Ludhiana Churches wished all citizens of Ludhiana a peaceful New Year.

Control room set up

The District Health Department has set up a control room at the Civil Surgeon Office in Ludhiana to tackle cases, if any, of swine flu. Swine flu is viral disease caused by H1N1. According to a press release issued by the department, most symptoms of swine flu are the same as seasonal flu. The symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, diarrhoea and vomiting. Later, breathlessness, chest pain, drowsiness, fall in blood pressure, sputum mixed with blood, bluish discoloration of nails develops.

Awarded

The Indian Institute of Architects-Ludhiana Centre (IIA-LC) architects were awarded as the best centre architects among the entire centres in India during 2014. The award was presented to the chairman of the Ludhiana Centre, Sanjay Goel, and his team comprising Harinder Boparai, joint secretary, Rajan Tangri, coordinator & administrator, Bimaldeep Singh, editor, Tarsem Goel, Amit Sanyal, Aashima Gupta and Ashwani Kaushal during a valedictory function of the National Convention of Architects (NATCON) at IIT, Powai, Mumbai.

Death mourned

Senior Congress leader Amarjit Singh Tikka condoled the death of cultural icon Jagdev Singh Jassowal. He said Jassowal played a significant role in promoting the Punjabi culture and heritage. He was accompanied by former MP Sangrur Gurcharan Singh Dadha.

Protest rally

The Bharat Nirman Mazdoor Union organised a protest rally against the demolition of shanties of labourers from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. The workers staged the protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Tarsem Jodhan, former MLA and trade unionist, said the labourers had been residing at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar for the past 30 years. He demanded rehabilitation for these labourers. — TNS
