Jalandhar, November 22

Additional Sessions Judge, Kapurthala, Balwinder Kumar today sentenced a schoolteacher, Paramjit, to 15 years of imprisonment for throwing acid on his former woman colleague over two years ago.

The incident dates back to July 15, 2014. The accused threw acid on the victim, a 31-year-old government teacher, while she was on her way to school on her scooter. She had suffered serious burns on her right cheek, right arm and thigh, chest and stomach.

The victim had stated that Paramjit was a teacher at a school that she had worked in earlier.

The court today sentenced him to 15 years of imprisonment and fined him Rs 15,000 under Section 326 A of the IPC.

A graduate from Talwandi Mehma village of Kapurthala, the victim had stated that she had thrown away her old phone with the SIM and memory card to avoid getting calls from Paramjit. However, he found the dumped phone, took out her photographs and threatened to morph them to harass her on social media, she had stated.

The victim had stated that though the accused was married and had two children at Khera Dona village in Kapurthala, he had insisted on having a relationship with her — a proposal which she had rejected. “He ruined my life and left permanent, painful scars on my body for his mad desires. My only grudge is even though I had lodged a complaint with the city police against the accused for threatening me a month prior to the incident, I did not get any protection,” she had then said. The victim was the only breadwinner of her family.
