Every professional needs a business card to introduce himself. Since exchanging cards is an important activity, it should not be conducted unmindfully. Like any other social situation, it has its own set of etiquette. Abruptly presenting a card to someone is not a great way to make a first impression. The right time to hand over a business card is at the beginning of a meeting. Similarly while talking to a new person, exchange cards when introductions are being carried out. When someone gives you a business card, reciprocate by offering yours to them. However, don't give more than one card unless specifically asked to do so. Most importantly invest in a good leather case to store the cards. Shoving them in the back pocket or bag conveys disrespect and a disorganized approach. A business card can be extremely helpful in remembering peoples' names and establishing new contacts.

Keep stock
The foremost rule in business card etiquette is to keep a stock of them. Make sure never to leave office or home without your business cards. Since an opportunity to network can arise any time, always have these handy. Keep the cards either in your briefcase, wallet or purse. Another option is to put them at multiple places so that they are easily accessible as and when required. Stock enough cards to give out at meetings and also a few extra for people you may meet unexpectedly. However, don't pack them too tightly since it may be tedious to pull one out. Getting caught without a business card is not only embarrassing but also extremely unprofessional.

Update business card
Business cards are the quickest way to convey essential information about an individual. As a consequence these should not carry obsolete facts which will defy the whole purpose of giving them out. Whenever your contact number changes get new cards printed at the earliest. In the meanwhile refrain from the temptation of scratching out details and re-writing them by hand. Instead inform recipients of those changes and allow them to make the corrections. Also include information other than phone number, office address and email on the business card. Revamp the card by adding social media links such as LinkedIn profile, Twitter handle and website. Double check to ensure your business card carries relevant and up-to-date information.

Invest in a card case
A business card is more than just a piece of paper. It is an extension of a person's identity and should be handled with utmost care. Invest in a small case to store the business cards in mint condition. A business card which is wrinkled or torn sends out a wrong message to the recipient. Make sure that the cards are fresh and clean before handing these over to someone. Similarly, buy a holder to carefully put away business cards received from other people. Sliding cards in the back pocket or throwing them in the purse can leave an unfavourable impression. Card cases not only prevent creasing but also reflect seriousness towards work.

Exchange in style
The cardinal rule of exchanging a business card is either with the right hand or both hands. Always make eye contact and smile politely when you present or receive a business card. Whilst presenting ensure the text faces recipient so that they can read the card immediately. Likewise take a few seconds to read the business card you receive to acknowledge the card owner. Pass a sincere comment on the logo, tagline or any other piece of information on the card. Also use the opportunity to speak out the person's name loudly, especially if it is in an unfamiliar language. Tucking away a card without even a glance is not only disrespectful but also shows lack of interest.

Follow-up
Lastly, an important aspect of business card etiquette is follow-up. A business card offers an opportunity not only to get contact information but also initiate a subsequent communication. Exchanging cards is a futile exercise unless there is an attempt to connect. Send a short e-mail or make a phone call to the person concerned within two days of the meeting. Thank the recipient for their time and share information about your business which might interest them. Make use of the notes written on the back of the card to make an instant connection. A quick follow-up is the best way to make most of business cards and show that you value work relationships.
