Swine flu has yet not subsided and now dengue has started showing its ugly face. A local resident has tested positive for dengue while a woman died of swine flu last night.

The deceased was a 63-year-old resident of Nawanshahr. With her death, the swine flu toll has reached 26 in the city hospitals.

Commenting upon the fresh case of dengue, Dr Ramesh, District Epidemiologist, said maximum temperature had risen considerably which has forced mosquitoes to come out of the dark and dingy places.

“These mosquitoes are the old ones which had gone into hiding at the onset of winters. Residents are advised not to let water accumulate in indoor pots and around house,” he said.

He said the swine flu cases had started decreasing but the virus would eliminate when the minimum temperature rises to 20 degrees. “People should protect themselves both from swine flu and dengue. I have called a meeting tomorrow. We will look after the arrangements for handling dengue cases. The department will soon start a drive to check mosquito breeding at homes,” he said.

Dr Ramesh advocated that people should continue wearing full-sleeve shirts to avoid mosquito bite.
