Panipat, June 22
In a jolt to the ruling BJP, Independent councillor Suresh Verma won the seat of Panipat Mayor by defeating BJP councillor Dushyant Bhatt in the MC House meeting held at the Mini-Secretariat on Monday.
Independent councillor from ward no. 7, Suresh Verma’s name was proposed by councillor Sushil, whereas BJP councillor from ward number 24 Dushyant Bhatt’s name was proposed by councillor Ashok.
Following his election, Suresh Verma said the councillors had elected him as Mayor cutting across party lines and he would work for the overall development for the city.
The post of Mayor fell vacant following a no trust motion, passed against then Mayor Bhupinder Singh in a meeting of MC House held under the supervision of Rohtak Commissioner Rajiv Ranjan on May 1.
As many as 17 councillors voted against him whereas only six councillors voted in Bhatt’s favour.
