The Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) today called an emergency meeting of officials of Snehalaya over their failure to inform it about the escape of four children from the premises on Tuesday night.

Commission chairperson Devi Sirohi asked the officials to prepare a report about the incident and the precautions they were taking to prevent such incidents in the future and submit it to the commission on Monday.

The commission expressed displeasure over the failure of officials of Snehalaya to inform it about the incident on the day of its occurrence stating that it was the monitoring body under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act in the city and all such incidents had to be reported to it according to the new rules.

The commission has decided to send a communication to the Secretary and Director of the Social Welfare Department asking it to issue instructions to Snehalaya officials that in the future they should inform the commission about any such incident on the day of its occurrence.

During the meeting, the commission asked the officials how the incident took place when security was deployed on the premises.

The chairperson said she had called the meeting as the commission came to know about the incident from media reports. She said the officials were not aware that under the revised rules, they had to inform the commission about such incidents.
