Sohi thrusts Banbhaura village into limelight again

Banbhaura village shot into limelight once again, when its son Amarjeet Sohi was sworn in as the Minister for Infrastructure in Canada on November 4. The village is famous as it is the native village of Bollywood film star Dharmendra’s wife.

Though no one from Amarjeet’s family resides here, his father Gurbakhash Singh (100) visits the village every year. He stays at his ancestral house for around six months.

However, Sohi’s cousins Ranjit Singh (60) and Avtar Singh live in the village. Avtar Singh’s son Harinderpal Singh looks after about 150 bighas of Sohi’s land.

Ranjit, who is the president of the Banbhaura Agriculture Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Limited, said Sohi passed his matriculation exam from Government High School, Banbhaura. “He emigrated to Canada, when he was a student of BA Part-I in Government College, Malerkotla,” added Ranjit.

Sohi, who got married in Sekha village in Faridkot district over 22 years ago, last visited the village in December 2013 to attend a wedding.
