UNA, MAY 21

Industries Minister Mukesh Agnihotri today unveiled the statue of Sardar Rudka Singh on Una-Hoshiarpur-Dharamsala Chowk in Jhaleda village, 5 kilometres from Una. He also paid floral tributes to the former leader of farmers.

Agnihotri said after Independence, Sardar Rudka Singh organised small and marginal farmers of Una district and motivated them to fight for reforms in the Revenue Acts. He said Sardar Rudka Singh was the main architect for the change in the status of landless farmers from ‘Mujara’ (tenants) to ‘Malik’ (owners). On March 15,1962, while leading a rally, Sardar Rudka Singh had breathed his last at this chowk in Jhaleda village.

Later, Agnihotri visited the truck union at the Tahliwal industrial area in Haroli and listened to the grievances of truck operators. He said since the industrial area was expanding, the parking space for trucks was cramped. He announced that the government would soon allot a bigger plot to the truck union on lease. The minister also announced Rs 2 crore for the construction of office space, rest rooms for drivers and other conveniences on the proposed truck union site. — OC
