Dehradun, February 5

Minister of State for Ayush (independent charge) Shripad Yesso Naik today approved the setting up of a homoeopathy and unani medical college in the state.

Naik, while inaugurating the Arogya mela here today, said the Central government would extend all possible help to Uttarakhand in setting up the college.

He said the Centre, in its new health policy, was attaching greater importance to ayush and other traditional systems of medicine.

Uttarakhand clearly has a bright prospect as ayush had been an integral part of its culture, he added.

He said the traditional systems of medicine — ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homoeopathy (Ayush) — could play an important role in filling gaps in the existing health services.

“We are looking at ways of integrating the traditional systems of medicine in a manner that would be reflected in the state’s health policy,” he said.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat, addressing the gathering, highlighted steps taken by the state to promote ancient Indian systems of health and medicine.

He said the site for a unani college had been identified near Piran Kaliyar. “We can do a lot in the field of herbal farming but we shall need a helping hand from the Centre in our endevours. If the NDAgovernment promises to help the state financially, the unani medical college would soon come up near Kaliyar,” said the Chief Minister.

Rawat sought a central aid in providing technical knowhow and funds for tapping herbal resources of the state.

Rawat said the state was organising a yoga kumbh in March to popularise yoga.

Several companies have put up their stalls at the the Arogya mela and ayurvedic and unani doctors were providing free consultation to the visitors.
