Government pensioners observed 33rd Pensioners Day at the Punjab Pensioners’ Bhawan at the Mini-Secretariat here under the aegis of the Pensioners Information Centre Management Committee.

GL Bajaj, chairman of the body, focused on the pending demands and problems being faced by the pensioners with regard to disbursement of pension through public sector banks.

Bajaj and other speakers lambasted the government for its failure to accept various pending demands and implementation of those demands that had been accepted in principle.

They said while the state government had failed to implement some of the recommendations made by the 5th Punjab Pay Commission and issue notification for setting up the 6th Pay Commission, the Centre had already got the 7th Pay Commission working.

Congress legislator Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who was the chief guest at the function, assured that demands of the pensioners would be taken up with the government at the appropriate level.

He also promised to provide financial assistance to the Pensioners Bhawan Management Committee.

Pensioners’ Day was also observed by the Northern Railway Pensioners’ Welfare Association.

Sher Singh, chairman of the association, called upon the government to accept pending demands of railway pensioners. He also called upon the Northern Railway authorities to ensure better healthcare facilities to serving employees and pensioners.
