Mohali, October 14

Deputy Mayor Manjit Singh Sethi today demanded that the payment to the sanitation contractor be stopped due to complaints of unsatisfactory work from some councillors.

Sethi, who has written to Mayor Kulwant Singh in this regard, said he had received complaints from some councillors about the unsatisfactory sanitation work in their wards. They alleged that proper lifting of garbage was not being done.

He said he had taken the sanitation contractor with him to see a few areas. The contractor was shown dumps of garbage.

Sethi said in Phase III-A, a heap of garbage was seen in a park. In Phases II, IIIB1, IIIB2, IV and VII, garbage was seen on roadsides and in vacant plots.

The Deputy Mayor said the contractor had himself admitted that the sanitation work was not up to the mark.

Sethi said the mechanised sanitation work had been given on contract for about Rs 12 crore. — OC
