Chandigarh, May 26

A special CBI court today awarded a one-year jail term and a fine of Rs 10,000 to UT Sub-Inspector Nirmal Singh in a graft case. The SI was convicted in this case on Tuesday.

Nirmal Singh was arrested by CBI sleuths on May 23, 2010, for demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 from Subhash, the complainant in the case, for writing a favourable chargesheet in a property dispute case. Subhash was assured of help in the case so that he could have the court judgment in his favour.

Subhash complained to the CBI in this regard. Nirmal Singh, the investigating officer in his case, was caught in a CBI trap under the Sector 34 police station area. Following this, the investigating agency submitted its challan against Nirmal Singh in the court and later charges were framed against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act by the court, which pronounced its judgment today.
