Chandigarh, March 3

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, turned into a cantonment today with the Chandigarh Police and the university security staff checking credentials of the visitors at all three gates of the university since morning in the wake of the proposed address of social activist Seema Azad.

The day started with all student parties meeting the Dean (Student Welfare), chief security officer, area DSP and officials of the UT Administration. The SFS representative was told that the university had no objection to the conference but Seema Azad could not address students.

Edit: Word for word

After the four-hour-long meeting, the SFS refused to follow the instructions and its president Daman told mediapersons that Azad would address students.

At 1.30 pm, Daman was rounded-up by the police near Gandhi Bhawan and then SFS started protest outside the VC office. Later in the evening, he was released by the police.

Meanwhile, the SFS raised slogans against the authorities for not allowing them to hold their conference despite the fact that their other guests-AFDR chairman Jagmohan Singh and historian Ajmer Singh- addressed students outside the VC office.

They said earlier the PU was a place for debate and discussion for students but today the authorities acted contrary to it by preventing the conference while allowing the ABVP to hold its “Tiranga yatra” yesterday.
