The Punjab government will press upon the Ministry of Human Resources Development to constitute Punjabi Development Board on the lines of Central Hindi Directorate to promote and propagate Punjabi and to develop it as a link language throughout the country. This was stated by Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa during the 53rd foundation day function of Punjabi University, Patiala, which was celebrated with the beginning of the eighth All-India Punjabi Conference today.
Dhindsa said he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprise him of the contribution of Punjabis and Punjabi language in the development of the country.
As many as 11 personalities who contributed towards the promotion of Punjabiat in their respective fields were honoured.
These included noted filmmaker Harry Baweja, cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, litterateurs Waryam Sandhu and Prem Gorkhi, media entrepreneur Jagjit Singh Dardi, classical singer Pooran Shah Koti, famous historian Dr Mohinder Kaur Gill, former DGP of Maharashtra PS Pasricha, Jodh Singh Narula, Dr Harish Dhillon and Baldev Singh Raina. They were presented with a citation, a memento and a cash reward of Rs31,000 each.
